Building Security Enhancements at Fort High:

Keeping Our Students and Staff Safe

Our students' and staff's well-being and safety are the highest priorities at Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) and, by extension, here at Fort High. In our continuous effort to enhance safety and security across all our schools, we are implementing a new, division-wide initiative to boost safety protocols and ensure that teaching and learning can proceed without concern.

Starting with the 2024-25 school year, we are introducing a change that, while familiar to some, will be a new practice for others within our division. All exterior doors of Fort High, including the front entrance, will be locked during school hours, specifically after 8:45 AM and 12:20 PM each day. These measures ensure a secure environment for our students and staff throughout the day.

For students arriving after the bell, parents, caregivers, volunteers, school visitors, and other guests, entry will be facilitated through the front door, equipped with a video-monitored intercom system. This system allows our office staff to securely manage access without leaving their posts, enhancing our school's security. Upon entry, visitors will follow our existing sign-in protocol, which includes reporting to the school office to sign in and helping us maintain a record of who is in the building.

This new entry procedure strengthens our security and maintains the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that Fort High is known for.

Deliveries during school hours, including food service, should be communicated to the school office in advance, ensuring all items pass through our main entrance.

A designated door will be unlocked during the times specified in the booking agreements for community events, extracurricular activities, or after-hours use of our facilities.

We are committed to the safety and well-being of our entire school community. These updates are a testament to our dedication to creating a secure learning environment for all. For further details on these changes, please refer to Administrative Procedure 538: Building Security and Door Locking, available on the Division website, or feel free to contact Fort High directly at 780-998-3751.

Your understanding, cooperation, and support in these efforts are greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Aaron Tuckwood
Principal
